- Definition
- substance that cannot be defined as a chemical, protein, nucleic acid, or polymer. Structurally diverse substances are defined using a set of elements based on immutable properties of a given material. Modifications that irreversibly alter the structure of the material, distinctive physical properties or are added to a material (gene in gene therapy substances) are captured in the definition of structurally diverse substance. Fractions derived from source material (oils and juices) are also captured in the definition NOTE For materials of biological origin this typically would be the family, genus, species, and part from which a material is derived.
