- Definition
- The "civil service" of the European Union. Its full name is the Commission of the European Communities; however, it is usually simply known as the Commission. It is the executive organ of the European Union. It proposes Community policy and legislation, implements the decisions taken by the Council of Ministers and supervises the day-to-day running of Commission policies. It is the "guardian" of the Treaties and can initiate action against Member States that do not comply with EC rules.
