- substances that are not isolated together or the result of the same chemical synthetic process EXAMPLE Material derived from the root and flower of the same plant would be defined as two substances since are not physically connected. Material isolated from the stem and leaf of plant which are physically connected would be a single substance. NOTE Material containing multiple substances is defined either as a mixture substance or a multi-substance (group 1) specified substance based on origin. Two substances brought together that do not undergo a chemical reaction resulting in the formation or breakage of specific chemical bonds would be defined as separate substances, even if there are nonbonding interactions between the substances
