- Definition
- A conflict of interest is a situation in which a public official's decisions are influenced by the official's personal interests. The common meaning of conflict of interest is a conflict between an individuals’ private or personal interest and his or her duty. However, conflict of interest may also refer to a situation where an individual has several duties which conflict without involvement of any private or personal interest. Mitigating conflict of interest means eliminating a conclusive or a reasonable presumption of bias in decision-making processes.
